Would a new laptop help set you up for success at school? We thought so! The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), Coca-Cola and the San Diego County Office of Education will be giving away 40 laptops this spring! Students enrolled in a San Diego County High School (in grades 9-12) are eligible to apply for the 2019 Laptop Scholarship Essay Contest.
Essay Prompt:
MTS recently approved changes to lower the cost of a Youth Transit Pass from $36 to $23 a month. Write an essay outlining whether you think lower monthly passes will help more students ride MTS: why or why not? Identify three benefits and/or challenges for students when choosing transit. Include a minimum of two strategies for how MTS can encourage more students (ages 6 - 18) to ride public transit.
Accepted essays will be a minimum of 750 words (please limit essays to no more than 1,000 words).
Entries will be scored on the following criteria:
- Clarity: The essay flows logically, includes correct grammar and punctuation, and has a clear thesis and conclusion.
- Creativity: The essay may have a creative intro or writing elements, as well as creative strategies for how to encourage students to ride transit (outreach ideas, ads, etc.).
- Research: Higher level essays may include 'compare and contrast' arguments, cited data to back persuasive statements, etc.
- Meets Minimum Requirements: The essay will be a minimum of 750 words, address areas outlined in essay prompt, and is submitted with a completed and signed application form. (Application forms will be available online starting Friday, March 1, 2019.)
All entries are due by Sunday, April 7, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Email entries are encouraged, and can be emailed to scholarship@sdmts.com. Essays may also be mailed/delivered to MTS, Attn: Laptop Scholarship, 1255 Imperial Avenue, Suite 1000, San Diego CA 92101. All mailed entries must be postmarked by April 7, 2019. (MTS offices open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Late entries will not be accepted.
