Believe it or not, modern light rail was born in San Diego, a region more known for its freeways than as a leader in transit innovation. But it's true, the San Diego Trolley led the renaissance in light rail development when it opened in 1981, and now more than 20 cities across North America have emulated our famous red Trolley system.
On July 31, MTS is inviting you to celebrate the Trolley's rich history with a free community celebration at the E Street Transit Center in Chula Vista!
The event will feature:
- Remarks from elected officials
- See historic Trolley cars
- DJ spinning 80s hits
- Food
- Fun activities for kids
- And more!
Join us from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to commemorate 40 years of Trolley service in our binational region. Over the last 40 years, the Trolley has been instrumental in our economic growth by supporting the San Diego Convention Center, Comic-Con, cross border connections, and major events, including Super Bowls, Holiday Bowls, San Diego Padres games, and countless sporting events and concerts at Qualcomm Stadium and Petco Park.
But, it's ultimately the people in South Bay communities who have made this one of the most successful transportation projects in the United States, and we look forward to celebrating the people who ride the UC San Diego Blue Line every day - to get to and from work, school, church, seeing family, and just getting out for the day. This celebration is for the people who make transit successful and who made it possible to extend the Blue Line north to the University area, a project that will celebrate its grand opening this fall.
We hope you'll join us in honoring our transit history, celebrating our anniversary, and looking ahead to many more decades of serving the San Diego community.
