The 5 Realign Project

The General Services Administration has scheduled a 57-hour closure of southbound I-5 heading into Mexico in September. The closure of the I-5 and I-805 freeways at SR 905 will take place Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 3 a.m. to noon on Monday, September 25, 2017. Here are a few important things to know during the closure:

• Pedestrian access atthe border will be open in both directions.
• Trolley service on all three lines will operate on normal weekend schedule.
• Delays due to traffic on MTS bus routes are anticipated near the U.S. – Mexico Border.
• If traveling near the border during the closure, be sure to plan ahead and allow for extra time!

The closure is necessary for Phase 3 of the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry Expansion and Reconfiguration Project. This phase of the $741 million project, known as The 5 Realign Project, is estimated to be complete in summer 2019 and will expand the number of southbound vehicle inspection lanes from five to 10.
