Most people run away from a fire. But special people run towards it in the name of safety, including MTS Bus Road Supervisor Alex Sherer.

At 11 p.m. on August 24, Alex was approaching the SR-94 freeway while traveling on the I-805 when he noticed a fire from a homeless encampment that was quickly spreading to the surrounding area. He first followed protocol, pulling over and reporting the incident to the Bus Control Center, who notified the fire department. Alex then grabbed the fire extinguisher in his MTS vehicle and began fighting the fire. After discharging the extinguisher, the fire was still out of control. Alex and another bystander began throwing buckets of dirt onto the growing flames until the fire department arrived. At that point he helped the first firefighter on scene with the water hose until another firefighter arrived to assist and gain control of the fire.

MTS Bus Road Supervisor Alex Sherer’s courageous effort is a fine demonstration that sometimes our commitment to safety extends beyond the roads and rails.

Great job Alex!
