Iesha Booker addressed the media on July 19 about her actions to help an injured police officer at MTS’ Copley Park Division./ Iesha was honored by the City of El Cajon at a recent city council meeting for helping an injured El Cajon police officer (from left to right): El Cajon Police Chief Jeff Davis, First Transit’s Mark Weinstein and John Lewis, MTS Bus Chief Operating Officer Bill Spraul, Iesha Booker, El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells and Councilmembers Gary Kendrick, Bob McClellan (MTS Boardmember), Ben Kalasho and Steve Goble.
Iesha Booker had two choices. Fight or flight. She chose to fight. Iesha was on her lunch break when she came to the aid of an El Cajon police officer who was the victim of a horrific assault that nearly took his life.
Officer Jose Sioson was trying to make an arrest at a KFC restaurant in El Cajon where Iesha was eating. The suspect aggressively assaulted him, knocking him unconscious. While unconscious, the suspect continued to beat Officer Sioson, causing significant injuries.
While everyone else ran from the scene or stood in shock, Iesha quickly stepped in after the suspect fled, and used Officer Sioson’s police radio to transmit “officer down at the KFC!”
It was that transmission that allowed police to expedite help, quickly arrest the suspect and get medical treatment to Officer Sioson.
Iesha’s decision to help an officer in desperate need was a quick reaction, and demonstrates her instinct to help others. Her actions summarize simple lessons we can all live by – stay safe, help those in need and good things will happen. And good things have come to Iesha. The El Cajon community was so moved about Iesha’s actions that the police chief and city council publicly thanked her and honored her at a recent city council meeting.
Way to go Iesha!
