Stadium Trolley Station Celebrates Reopening for Snapdragon's First Game

MTS will ramp up service for SDSU’s first at-home game, Aztecs vs. Wildcats

San Diego - Today, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) joined San Diego State University (SDSU) Athletics and SDSU leaders for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the beginning of a new era for San Diego sports fans. 

After two years of construction, the much-anticipated Snapdragon Stadium will host its first game this Saturday, September 3, between the SDSU Aztecs and University of Arizona Wildcats. MTS will reopen its Stadium Station permanently and run extra Trolley service to get fans to the game. 

“Since its opening on campus, the Green Line Trolley has been part of SDSU’s culture and tradition on game days,” said Sharon Cooney, MTS Chief Executive Officer. “We are proud that thousands of students and sports fans include the Trolley as a key part of their game day experience, and we are excited to reopen and welcome fans back for new experiences at Snapdragon Stadium.”

“Just a 7-minute ride from SDSU, the green line serves as a physical connection from campus to our cutting-edge Snapdragon Stadium,” said J.D. Wicker, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at SDSU.  I can’t wait to see the countless San Diego sports fans arriving via trolley for this weekend’s home opener and for the many games and events to come.”

“When the improvements to this station are paired with the new active transportation infrastructure throughout SDSU Mission Valley, including four miles of bike and pedestrian infrastructure, it will be easier for people to rely less on their personal vehicles, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping us all achieve our climate goals,” said Gina Jacobs, SDSU Associate Vice President for Mission Valley Development.

In addition to Snapdragon Stadium, SDSU Mission Valley will also include community parks and open space, housing, and an Innovation District to support SDSU research.

On Saturday, Snapdragon Stadium will open its gates to fans at 10:30 a.m., with kick-off scheduled for 12:30 p.m. To accommodate what is anticipated to be a large turnout, MTS is planning to run extra Trolley service, and encourages fans to plan ahead to make the best of the opening day experience. Service enhancement include:

• MTS will add extra Green Line Trolley service from SDSU to the Stadium Station between 9:25 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. (combined with regular Green Line service, trains will run between the stations every 7.5 minutes)
• MTS will ramp up service from Santee to the Stadium Station leading up to kick-off (extra service trains will depart Santee at 10:48 a.m. and 11:18 a.m.
• Post-game, MTS will run extra service from the Stadium Station to SDSU. Combined with regular Green Line service, trains will run every 7.5 minutes between the stations from 3:27 p.m. to 5:42 p.m.
• MTS will run extra service westbound post-game trips as needed.

Fans are encouraged to use MTS’ free park & ride lots throughout the Trolley system, then take the Green Line directly to the Stadium. View the full list of Park & Ride lots on the MTS website.

• Balboa Avenue (UC San Diego Blue Line transfer to Green Line at Old Town) 227 free spots
• Tecolote Road (UC San Diego Blue Line transfer to Green Line at Old Town) 279 free spots
• Nobel Drive (UC San Diego Blue Line transfer to Green Line at Old Town) 289 free spots
• Bayfront/E Street Station (UC San Diego Blue Line transfer to Green Line at Old Town) 267 free spots

In addition, SDSU will offer paid parking on the main campus for $20, which includes round-trip Trolley passes for up to four fans between the main SDSU campus and Stadium Station. 

Buying Your Fare: 

• Riders are encouraged to use their PRONTO app to travel to the stadium. Riders can add money to their PRONTO card or app and travel for as little as $5 round-trip.
• Discounted fares are available for senior riders.
• Youth with a registered PRONTO card or app account can ride free with the Youth Opportunity Pass.
• Family Weekends: Up to two kids 12 and under who don’t have a Youth account yet, can ride Trolley for free with any paying adult.
