First of New 5000 Series Light Rail Vehicles Arrives
In 2016, MTS ordered 45 new light rail vehicles from Siemens and the first 5000 series Trolley car has arrived in San Diego. From a train operator’s standpoint, the functionality will remain the same. However, passengers will see a big difference. The LRVs will feature a redesigned middle section of seating to improve passenger flow including greater wheelchair accessibility and bicycle storage. MTS will use 36 of the 45 new LRVs on its Mid-Coast Trolley expansion and the rest will be used to increase frequency on the UC San Diego Blue and Orange lines.
MTS Rail Wins National Safety Award
In case you missed it…MTS Rail earned the top safety award from the American Public Transportation Association for its successful “Anticipate-Recognize-Take Action! (ART)” campaign that eliminated Trolley accidents involving illegal left turns by downtown motorists.
