Final 42 – Last of U2 Trolley Cars to be Sold

They’ve traveled millions of miles on MTS rail lines but it’s time to say goodbye to the remaining U2 Trolley cars. Many have been sent to museums. One will be on permanent display at a future Karl Strauss brewery to highlight its Red Trolley Ale. Now, the final 42 are on the auction block. “We anticipate getting multiple bids from scrapping and wrecking companies,” said Troy Girard, MTS procurement specialist. “It’s a complex job, so businesses will most likely need to team up.” The hardest part will be getting the U2s out of the yard. There’s a full-time rail operation taking place, catenary wire to avoid, and tracks and switches to be pulled through. But once the U2s are gone, room will be available to bring in new low-car floors.
