High School Laptop Scholarship Contest

Would a new laptop help set you up for success at school? We thought so! The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), Coca-Cola and the San Diego County Office of Education will be giving away 40 laptops this spring! Students enrolled in a San Diego County High School (in grades 9-12) are eligible to apply for the 2018 Laptop Scholarship Essay Contest.

Essay Prompt:

What are some reasons San Diegans might want to choose public transit over driving a personal vehicle? Whether young or old, a single college student or a family, MTS has services for all types of San Diegans. Write a persuasive essay telling San Diego residents why they should Choose Transit. Essays should be a minimum of 750 words, and a maximum of 1,200 words. 

Entries will be scored on the following criteria:

  • Persuasiveness: The essay includes several arguments for choosing public transportation, and may include both qualitative and quantitative reasons.
  • Clarity: The essay flows logically, includes correct grammar and punctuation, and has a clear thesis and conclusion. 
  • Creativity: The essay may havea creative/catchy intro, and includes a variety of persuasive arguments. 
  • Meets Minimum Requiements: The essay will be a minimum of 750 words, and is submitted with a completed and signed application form. (Application forms will be available March 1, 2018)

All entries are due by Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Entries can be emailed to scholarship@sdmts.com or mailed/delivered to MTS, Attn: Laptop Scholarship, 1255 Imperial Avenue, Suite 1000, San Diego CA 92101. All mailed entries must be postmarked by April 8, 2018. (MTS offices open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
