Marriage can lead to happy life. It can also lead to MTS having one of the safest bus operator husband and wife teams for miles around. MTS Bus Operators Melanie and Fred Bailey were presented with the National Safety Council’s Million Mile Award for their outstanding safety record, each having driven for 25,000 hours—or roughly a million miles—without a preventable accident.
Melanie and Fred met at MTS 12 years ago; while they both worked out of IAD. They came to know each other well through a mutual circle of friends and married five years ago. “I would see Fred on the yard and I was immediately drawn to his smile,” said Melanie.
“Then we started running into each other outside of work and became really good friends. I thought she was a really cool person,” added Fred.
Although Melanie and Fred reached the million mile mark together, they admire each other’s individual achievement and take pride in one another. “It was never a competition to see who could drive the most miles accident-free,” said Melanie. “Every time we’re out there, we take safety seriously. We always want to return home safely, and we want the same for our riders.”
