Would a new laptop help set you up for success at school? We thought so! The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), Coca-Cola and the San Diego County Office of Education will be giving away 40 laptops this spring! Students enrolled in a San Diego County High School (in grades 9-12) are eligible to apply for the 2020 Laptop Scholarship Essay Contest. Essays now being accepted through Friday, April 10, 2020
Essay Prompt:
Developing a shared vision for transit in San Diego: As MTS develops the Elevate SD 2020 plan to expand and improve public transportation in San Diego, it’s important for the next generation to think critically about the future. The region is experiencing many immediate challenges, such as housing affordability, climate change, traffic congestion and more. Write a persuasive essay outlining how public transportation can help address regional challenges. Identify two or three major challenges facing San Diego, and how projects included in the Elevate SD 2020 plan can help address these issues. Accepted essays will be a minimum of 750 words (please limit essays to no more than 1,000 words).

Entries will be scored on the following criteria:
- Clarity: The essay flows logically, includes correct grammar and punctuation, and has a clear thesis and conclusion.
- Creativity: The essay may have a creative intro or writing elements, as well as creative strategies for how to encourage students to ride transit (outreach ideas, ads, etc.).
- Research: Higher level essays may include 'compare and contrast' arguments, cited data to back persuasive statements, etc.
- Meets Minimum Requirements: The essay will be a minimum of 750 words, address areas outlined in essay prompt, and is submitted with a completed and signed application form.
DEADLINE: All entries are due by Friday, April 10, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. PST. Email entries are encouraged, and can be emailed to scholarship@sdmts.com. Essays may also be mailed/delivered to MTS, Attn: Laptop Scholarship, 1255 Imperial Avenue, Suite 1000, San Diego CA 92101. All mailed entries must be postmarked by Friday, April 10, 2020. (MTS offices open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Late entries will not be accepted.
